What to see in Como in one day: a walking itinerary
Como is best explored on foot: the loveliest places are just a few minutes from each other. Here is an itinerary for one day, to adapt to your own pace.
The Duomo and the Broletto, in Piazza Duomo.
Morning: the old town
Start from Piazza Duomo: the cathedral is an extraordinary masterpiece of art and history and, next to it, you will find the Broletto, the medieval building overlooking the square. Then let the streets of the centre lead you to Piazza San Fedele, one of the city’s most atmospheric squares, and to the Teatro Sociale, for shows and events.
The Broletto, with its tower and arches. The domes of the Duomo.
Midday: the lake
Head down to the lakefront: Piazza Cavour and the pier are the heart of life on the water, and the boats leave from here. Continue along the promenade to the Giardini a Lago and the Tempio Voltiano, the museum dedicated to Alessandro Volta. Further on, on the breakwater, stands Life Electric, the installation that has become a symbol of the city. A warning: along this stretch of lakefront, in front of the Giardini a Lago and the Tempio Voltiano, swimming is prohibited.
The Tempio Voltiano, the museum dedicated to Alessandro Volta. The lakefront, towards the Tempio Voltiano.
Afternoon: Como from above
From the station in Piazza De Gasperi the funicular climbs to Brunate: in about seven minutes you are on the lake’s “balcony”. We talk about it in Brunate and the funicular. Times and tickets change over time: check the official website before you go.
Evening: another Como
If you still have energy, two places tell another side of the city: Porta Torre, the medieval symbol of Como, and the Casa del Fascio, a masterpiece of rationalist architecture by Giuseppe Terragni. Then head back to the lakefront for an aperitif.
Where to stay to do it all on foot
Volta House is in Piazza Volta, in the old town, with the lake and the centre a few minutes away. Maison La Perla, in Viale Roosevelt, is about 6 minutes on foot from the Duomo and about 10 from the lakefront. If you prefer somewhere quieter, Casa Tia, in Monteolimpino, is a few minutes’ drive from the centre, with free street parking. Want to see all the options? Discover the apartments or book direct.
